The Micro-Enterprise Loan (MEL) Program was implemented in late 2022. KARUCO graduates applied to receive small business loans to start businesses in Karagwe that promote and sustain economic development, gender equity and fair business practices. Five graduates received loans to start up businesses in: 1) Sunflower Production; 2) Beef Fattening; 3) Pig Production; 4) Rice and Grain Supply and 5) Agrovet. MEL recipients must pay back the loans within 1.5 years so funds can be ‘recycled’ and used again to promote new businesses. The MEL Program honors the memory of the late Mr. Mel Breed, ETI supporter, donor, Board Member, and friend to all in Karagwe.
